If you're de-installing or relocating an MRI, you'll hear the term "ramp-down." Here's what it means in plain English — and why getting it right protects a lot of value.
An MRI magnet is always "on"
The superconducting magnet at the heart of an MRI holds its field continuously, kept cold by liquid helium. Before the machine can be safely moved, that field has to be brought down deliberately.
Ramp-down: the controlled shutdown
A ramp-down is the controlled reduction of the magnetic field to zero, performed by a certified engineer, with liquid helium recovered where possible. It's the safe, planned way to power the magnet down.
Quench: the version you don't want
A quench is the opposite — a sudden, uncontrolled loss of superconductivity that boils off thousands of dollars of helium in seconds, vents it as gas, and can damage the magnet itself. Quenches sometimes happen by accident; they should never be your removal plan.
